The application process is now open for the Science Summer School 2025 programme.
Our Science Summer School is a programme for 16 – 18 year olds introducing the role of a modern zoo through a week long course focusing on practical activities including enclosure design, animal behaviour observations, collection planning and zoo veterinary practices.
Throughout the week, students will engage with a variety of specialists from the RZSS family. This culminates in a group presentation.

How to apply
To apply please complete the online application form before the stated application deadline. We ask that all students applications are accompanied by a recommendation from a teacher (or other responsible adult who knows the student well). Teachers looking to submit their recommendations should complete the following Teacher Recommendation form.
The deadline for applications is 9am on Monday 3 February 2025. All applicants should hear if their application has been successful or not within 3 weeks of the deadline passing. This will allow successful applicants as much time as possible to arrange accommodation for yourselves if it is required.

Where can I apply from?
This course is for young people aged 16 – 18 (pupils who are just finishing S4 – S6 in Scotland). Free places are not restricted to local learners and we accept many applicants from across the globe every year.
Can I attend again?
Please do not apply if you have attended the Science Summer School before in previous years.
Is it curriculum linked?
Science Summer School is ideal for complementing learning within Higher and Advanced Higher Biology curriculums, as well as for preparing for further education within colleges and universities.
What will we do?
Regarding content, learners can expect to explore topics including animal behaviour, welfare, genetic management, veterinary science, ecology and conservation. Learners will participate in designing and conducting scientific research, analysis and presentation using an assigned animal group in the zoo. Learners can expect to develop useful transferable skills including independent and team-based working skills, problem solving, time management, public speaking and PowerPoint design skills. There is also a significant use of IT as part of the course.
Accommodation
Please note we cannot provide accommodation. This is not a residential course. If you are unable to commute daily to the applied for location, you will need to arrange accommodation yourself.
Hard work?
Which we try to ensure we create a memorable and fun experience for learners, the week contains a heavy academic work load concentrating on non-invasive, observational animal research/science. Students will NOT be working directly with animals.
Cancellation policy
Whilst the course is free to attend during the advertised weeks, there is an estimated cost of £195.00 per learner in providing this programme. A late cancellation fee of £50.00 may be applied to successful applicants who withdraw within 4 weeks of the course start date.
Catering
The students would be expected to bring their own packed lunches each day but drinks and biscuits will be provided at breaks.
Friday afternoon presentations
On the last day it will be possible for teachers and family to come along and listen to what the students have done during the week at our Science Summer School Friday Presentations.
